Running a small business in Suffolk comes with plenty of decisions, and marketing is often one of the trickiest to get right. It matters, but it’s rarely straightforward, and many business owners find themselves unsure which activities genuinely make a difference and which simply take up time.
That thinking sits behind Leading Motion.
My background is in strategic marketing, and over the years I’ve worked with a wide range of businesses at different stages. One consistent theme I’ve noticed is that most small and medium-sized businesses don’t struggle because they’re doing nothing they struggle because marketing lacks clarity and structure. Activity happens, but it isn’t always connected to a clear goal.
When I talk to business owners across Suffolk, the conversation often starts with stepping back and looking at the bigger picture. What is the business trying to achieve? How does marketing support that? Which activities actually move things forward, and which ones are more habit than help?
A common pattern is marketing becoming reactive. Things get busy, then quiet, and marketing is used as a short-term response rather than a steady, considered process. Taking a calmer approach with a simple plan that can be reviewed and adjusted often makes marketing feel far more manageable and productive.
Another area that’s frequently overlooked is measurement. This doesn’t need to be complex, but having a few meaningful indicators can provide reassurance and guide decisions. Knowing what’s working, even at a basic level, removes much of the uncertainty.
What I enjoy about the Suffolk business community is its openness. There’s a wide mix of sectors and experiences, but many of the challenges are shared. Conversations where ideas are exchanged and experiences compared often prove just as valuable as formal advice.
Being part of ISSBA is something I value for exactly that reason. It’s a space for learning, discussion, and mutual support.
If any of these themes resonate and you’d find it useful to talk them through in more detail, I’m always happy to have an informal catch-up. I offer a free Zoom call where we can talk about marketing in general, what tends to work well for businesses at different stages, and how others are approaching similar challenges.
